Dealing with a Pressuring HVAC Salesperson

There’s a lot to consider before making a commitment to an HVAC system purchase, such as equipment type, size, brand name, and efficiency. Sometimes, a pushy, pressuring HVAC salesperson can make the process even more stressful. Here are some suggestions for dealing with pressuring HVAC salespeople.

  • Remember that you are in charge — Remember that you are the one in charge of the process, and it is your needs that must be considered when making the purchase. Salespersons should add value to the transaction by informing and assisting you, not making you feel pressured to buy something you may not need or want.
  • Resist emotional appeals — Any attempt to appeal to your emotions should automatically be considered suspect. Don’t let an HVAC salesperson make you feel like you’re failing your family if you don’t buy a high-priced air conditioner with all the latest technology. If you feel your emotions being triggered by dealing with the salesperson, stop and walk away.
  • Don’t make a decision without sufficient information — You need to know a lot of information before you can make an HVAC system purchase. This includes information about the system itself but also about your comfort needs. Ask questions until you have a good understanding of the equipment and what it can do for you. If you need additional information from processes such as load calculations, don’t let the salesperson insist that you make a purchase until the additional information is acquired and processed.
  • Don’t be taken in by false deals — If a salesperson offers a system at an extremely high price initially, then at a drastically reduced price later on, it’s probably not a real bargain. The initial quote was just to make you think the second price was a deal. Don’t be fooled by this type of manipulation.
